Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Technician

The Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Technician course is a custom designed qualification program for the personnel for those emergency services agencies who are expanding their mission to include helicopter rescue operations, who wish to expand the skills of members in an existing program, or who may find themselves working with or on-board rotary winged aircraft during significant emergencies of other events. As well, this course addresses the skill requirements found in the relevant NFPA and NIMS SAR credentialing documents.

This intensive, five day course, is based on the needs of the agency, their mission, the aircraft they will be using, and the existing capabilities of their personnel. The typical course "begins at the beginning" and starts with an emphasis on safety during helicopter rescue operations. During the course of the five days, the students are immersed in lectures and "hands-on" practical stations conducted in the classroom, on land, and in the water. In essence, they will do what they will be doing during actual helicopter rescue operations.

Skill Sets Include:
Human factors in aviation, crew resource management, and helicopter rescue safety, helicopter types, dynamics of flight, helicopter rescue configurations, personal and team equipment, and survival during in-flight emergencies.  Water insertion techniques, dunker training, emergency breathing devices, victim approach and control, and the use of specialized rescue equipment while in the water.  Landing Zone management, aircraft familiarization and briefing, aircrew briefing, communications, field survival and signaling, and rigging the aircraft for rescue operations.
